Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, Golf Club & Spa has appointed Chef Christopher Hutchinson as Executive Chef of Ember & Rye, the resort’s steakhouse led by chef and restaurateur Richard Blais. Hutchinson brings more than 10 years of culinary experience across restaurants in Portland, San Francisco and San Diego.

His background spans seasonality, live-fire cooking, whole-animal butchery, pasta and tasting menus. Having worked across established restaurants as well as concept-driven kitchens, Hutchinson brings experience in menu development, ingredient sourcing and culinary operations to his new position at Ember & Rye.

The leadership move at Hyatt contributes to the evolving talent landscape, reinforcing developments across executive movements in hotels.

Chef Christopher Hutchinson Takes Charge at Ember & Rye

In his new role, Hutchinson will oversee the culinary operations and menu direction at Ember & Rye. His responsibilities will focus on seasonal ingredients, prime cuts, seafood, sourcing and live-fire cooking.

Ember & Rye is one of the dining destinations at Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, Golf Club & Spa in Carlsbad, California. The restaurant’s culinary identity provides a setting for Hutchinson’s experience with live-fire techniques, whole-animal butchery and ingredient-focused cooking.

Culinary Experience Across the West Coast

Hutchinson began his professional culinary career in Portland, where he worked at Bluehour, 23Hoyt and Jackrabbit. These early roles provided experience across professional restaurant kitchens and established the foundation for his culinary career.

He later moved to San Francisco, where he trained at Quince under Chef Michael Tusk. His experience at the restaurant further developed his exposure to ingredient-driven cooking, refined culinary techniques and menu development.

    Experience in San Diego

After moving to San Diego, Hutchinson served as Executive Chef at Huntress before later leading Lumi Rooftop, a Nikkei-inspired restaurant developed with Chef Akira Back.

Across these roles, he worked on menu development, ingredient sourcing, live-fire cooking and whole-animal butchery. His experience in San Diego also gave him a deeper connection to the local culinary market, which he now brings to his role at Ember & Rye.

Focus on Seasonality and Live-Fire Cooking

Hutchinson’s culinary background includes several techniques and disciplines relevant to the steakhouse environment, including live-fire cooking and whole-animal butchery. His experience also extends to pasta and tasting menus.

At Ember & Rye, his culinary direction will centre on seasonal ingredients, prime cuts and seafood, alongside sourcing and live-fire preparation. The role will also involve shaping the restaurant’s menu direction and maintaining its culinary operations.

    Influences Beyond the United States

Hutchinson’s culinary approach has also been shaped by exposure to food cultures outside the United States. His teenage years in Malaysia provided an early connection with international food traditions and contributed to the broader influences behind his culinary perspective.

Combined with his professional experience across Portland, San Francisco and San Diego, this background has given Hutchinson exposure to different culinary approaches and restaurant environments.

Culinary Leadership at Park Hyatt Aviara

Chad Eding, General Manager of Park Hyatt Aviara, welcomed Hutchinson to the resort’s culinary leadership team.

“Chef Christopher brings an impressive depth of experience and a genuine respect for the ingredients and craft behind great cooking. His background across some of the West Coast’s most respected kitchens, combined with his deep connection to San Diego, makes him an exceptional addition to our culinary leadership team.”

Hutchinson’s appointment adds a chef with experience across restaurant operations, menu development and live-fire techniques to Ember & Rye’s culinary team.

Building on Ember & Rye’s Culinary Direction

Ember & Rye forms part of Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, Golf Club & Spa’s culinary portfolio, which includes five dining destinations offering coastal California and globally influenced cuisine.

As Executive Chef, Hutchinson will lead Ember & Rye’s culinary operations and menu direction, with seasonal produce, prime cuts, seafood and live-fire cooking among the key areas of focus. His experience across West Coast restaurants and his connection to San Diego provide the foundation for his new role at the resort.
