Kazakh Vice Minister of Transport Talgat Lastayev announced the plans on the sidelines of Aviation Security Week in Astana on October 20, identifying India as a major growth market because of its large population, proximity to Kazakhstan and expanding aviation demand.
Kazakhstan Identifies India as a Key Aviation Market
The proposed expansion reflects Kazakhstan’s efforts to strengthen its international aviation network and improve connectivity with high-demand markets. India’s growing travel demand presents opportunities to develop additional air services between the two countries.
Flights to 10 Indian cities would broaden the range of direct travel options available to passengers, potentially supporting tourism, commercial exchanges and business travel. The expansion could also improve connections for travellers using Kazakhstan as a transit point for journeys to other international destinations.
Air Astana Operates Existing India Services
Kazakhstan’s flag carrier, Air Astana, currently operates 13 weekly flights between Almaty and Delhi and three weekly flights between Almaty and Mumbai, according to Kazakhstan’s Civil Aviation Committee.
The airline has also indicated its readiness to introduce services to additional Indian destinations. Expanding beyond the existing routes could provide travellers with more options for reaching Kazakhstan and connecting to destinations across its international network.
Expansion Targets a Wider International Network
Kazakhstan’s plan to increase its international route network to 160 destinations forms part of its broader aviation development strategy. Strengthening links with India could contribute to this objective while supporting passenger movement between Central Asia and South Asia.
The proposed routes are expected to create further opportunities for airlines, tourism businesses and commercial sectors in both countries. The development of additional services will depend on route planning, operational considerations and the progression of the proposed expansion.
