Tamara Leisure Experiences (TLE) has introduced Yazhi – The Grand Koodal, a premium wedding and celebrations destination in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The property marks TLE’s first Kalyana Mandapa, expanding the company’s hospitality offering into weddings, receptions, engagement ceremonies and other social celebrations.
The launch comes as India’s wedding market continues to become more organised, with families increasingly looking for professionally managed venues that can accommodate multiple elements of a celebration. Yazhi has been developed around this demand while drawing on Madurai’s long association with temple traditions, weddings and cultural celebrations.
This property contributes to Tamara’s growth trajectory within recent hotel launches.India’s Wedding Market Enters a More Organised Phase
India’s wedding economy is undergoing significant growth and formalisation, with industry estimates putting the market at approximately INR 10 lakh crores and the country recording around 10 million weddings annually. The traditional wedding season from November to January accounts for a substantial share of celebrations, creating a sizeable opportunity for hospitality and events businesses.
At the same time, wedding formats are becoming more varied, ranging from intimate gatherings and heritage properties to luxury hotels, destination weddings and purpose-built venues. In South India, however, the Kalyana Mandapam continues to hold a central position, particularly in Tamil Nadu, where temple traditions remain closely connected to wedding celebrations.
Samir MC, CEO, Tamara Leisure Experiences, said,
“Shaped by plurality of taste and diversity in preferences, India’s wedding economy is among the country’s most resilient consumption stories. As the category becomes increasingly organised and families seek more seamless, professionally managed celebration experiences, we see a meaningful opportunity to bring our understanding of design, service and guest experience to this space. Tamil Nadu, with its deep-rooted traditions of temple weddings and Kalyana Mandapams, was a natural choice for this vision, while Madurai, where celebration and devotion have been intertwined for centuries, offered the ideal setting to bring it to life. Through Yazhi, our endeavour is to build a venue that honours the scale and grandeur a Tamil wedding calls for, while bringing the warmth, comfort and attention to detail that TLE is known for.”
Why Madurai Forms the Setting for Yazhi
Madurai’s historical and cultural identity provides the backdrop for TLE’s first Kalyana Mandapa. The city, known in antiquity as Koodal, is home to the Meenakshi Amman Temple and has long been associated with religious festivals and ceremonies.
The annual Chithirai festival includes the re-enactment of the Thirukalyanam, representing the divine wedding of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar. The celebration attracts devotees and travellers and remains an important part of Madurai’s cultural identity.
Against this backdrop, Yazhi’s positioning as a dedicated wedding destination connects its offering with a city where weddings, religious traditions and community celebrations have remained closely intertwined.
10,500 Sq. Ft. Function Hall Anchors the Venue
Yazhi – The Grand Koodal is spread across 1.44 acres and has been planned to accommodate weddings and related celebrations within a single destination. Its principal event space is a 10,500 sq. ft. main function hall with seating for more than 850 guests and a floating capacity of upwards of 1,500.
The hall is intended to accommodate the scale and ceremonial requirements of Tamil weddings, including the muhurtham and subsequent celebrations. A separate 6,300 sq. ft. dining facility can accommodate approximately 350 guests at a time and is supported by a fully equipped commercial kitchen for large-scale food preparation and service.
Facilities Built Around Wedding Requirements
The property’s facilities extend beyond its principal function and dining areas. Five guest rooms provide families with accommodation within the venue, giving them space to rest and prepare between ceremonies and celebrations.
Yazhi also offers ample parking and an accessible location for guests travelling within Madurai or arriving from outside the city. The combination of event infrastructure, dining, accommodation and supporting facilities is intended to reduce the logistical requirements involved in organising multiple wedding functions across separate locations.
TLE Expands into Wedding and Celebration Hospitality
The launch of Yazhi represents a new category for Tamara Leisure Experiences, taking the company’s hospitality expertise into dedicated wedding and social celebration infrastructure.
For Madurai, the venue adds a purpose-built option to a market supported by the city’s established wedding culture and religious tourism. For TLE, Yazhi provides an entry point into India’s expanding organised wedding economy, while retaining a focus on the traditions and destination-specific character associated with Tamil Nadu.
