A Wellness Retreat Rooted in Place
The name Amaidiyana, derived from the Tamil word for peace and tranquility, reflects the philosophy behind the property. The retreat aligns with CGH Earth’s approach to authenticity, environmental responsibility, and community engagement, ensuring that the development responds to its surroundings rather than reshaping them.
Located within a culturally and ecologically significant region, the property integrates itself into the landscape, allowing the guest experience to emerge organically from the environment. This approach is consistent with the brand’s philosophy of creating spaces that are both immersive and context-driven.
Leadership Perspective on the Launch
Commenting on the launch, Michael Dominic said,
“At CGH Earth, we believe every space can tell a story when shaped with care. Sanctuary Amaidiyana is that story brought to life, a quiet refuge that restores balance while gently inspiring creative expression. In harmony with the spirit of Auroville, we have created a space where architecture in intertwined with the land, cuisine honours seasonality and craft, and wellness is a lived experience. Amaidiyana represents eco-luxury with purpose—rooted in awareness, connection, and the joy of meaningful living.”
Architecture Shaped by Local Craft
The property has been designed by Auroville-based architect Mona Doctor-Pingel, with a focus on blending contemporary design with local craftsmanship. The architecture incorporates natural materials and traditional techniques, ensuring that the built environment remains connected to the region’s cultural and ecological identity.
Elements such as doors, metalwork, ceramics, and bas-reliefs have been created by local artisans, while hand-painted artworks by Auroville artists provide each room with a distinct visual and sensory identity. The design approach emphasises simplicity, functionality, and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.
Heiwa and Watsu: Spaces for Therapeutic Wellness
Sanctuary Amaidiyana includes dedicated wellness spaces such as Heiwa and a purpose-built Watsu pool, offering structured environments for relaxation and therapy.
Heiwa, conceptualised by Poppo Pingel, follows a minimalist architectural approach with features including a sloped roof, a proportioned rock garden, and a transition from raked marble chips to a plunge pool. Materials such as natural stone, teak, and whitewashed surfaces define the space, creating a calm and balanced environment.
The Watsu pool, maintained at 32–34°C, is housed beneath a 10-metre dome inspired by traditional construction methods. Built using thin fired bricks and mud mortar, the structure supports controlled acoustics and ventilation. The circular pool layout enables water-based therapy practices focused on movement, buoyancy, and relaxation.
Integrating Wellness, Cuisine and Culture
The retreat is designed as a holistic space that integrates wellness with culinary and cultural experiences. Guests have access to Ayurveda suites, meditation spaces, and curated activities that reflect the local environment.
Commenting on the concept, George Joseph said,
“Amaidiyana brings together the many dimensions of well-being into one harmonious, integrated space. It is not just a place for wellness, but a philosophy that unifies healing practices, conscious tourism and quiet restoration under one roof. From dual sit-outs and garden-facing rooms to an intimate restaurant, Ayurveda suites, and our Watsu sanctum, every touchpoint is engineered for calm, comfort, and care. Working closely with local artisans, growers, and practitioners, we curate experiences, from e-bike trails and sustainable workshops in Auroville to heritage walks in Pondicherry, that feel personal, responsible, and deeply rooted in place. One can truly experience the best of Auroville, while staying in its immediate periphery.”
He further added,
“The retreat’s culinary programme is guided by CGH Earth’s Conscious Cuisine philosophy and the vibrant food cultures of Tamil Nadu and Auroville. Fresh herbs and vegetables are harvested from the on-site organic kitchen garden, complemented by artisanal Auroville cheeses, breads, chocolates, grains, and condiments”.
Conscious Cuisine and Local Sourcing
The culinary programme at Sanctuary Amaidiyana follows CGH Earth’s Conscious Cuisine philosophy, focusing on seasonal ingredients and local sourcing. Produce is harvested from the on-site organic kitchen garden, while additional ingredients are sourced from Auroville’s network of artisanal producers.
This approach supports local communities while offering guests a dining experience that is both regionally rooted and sustainably driven.

The launch of Sanctuary Amaidiyana reflects the growing demand for wellness-led travel experiences in India. Travellers are increasingly seeking destinations that offer a combination of relaxation, cultural immersion, and sustainable practices.
With its focus on holistic well-being, local engagement, and experiential design, the property is positioned to cater to this evolving demand.
