Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has crossed the 3 million passenger milestone since commencing commercial operations on 25 December 2025, marking a significant early phase in the airport’s development as an aviation gateway for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Western India.
The airport has expanded its network from 13 destinations at launch to 46 destinations and has handled approximately 22,500 commercial flights. NMIA also commenced scheduled international services within its first 200 days, beginning with connectivity to Abu Dhabi.
Passenger Traffic Reaches 3 Million
NMIA’s latest milestone comes alongside a focus on operational performance and passenger service. In August, the airport recorded an average last-bag delivery performance of 94%, a measure that reflects the time taken for passengers to receive their checked baggage after arrival.
The airport said the performance is comparable with global benchmarks and forms part of its focus on operational efficiency and passenger experience as traffic continues to grow.
A Navi Mumbai International Airport spokesperson said,
“Crossing the 3 million passenger milestone marks an important step in NMIA’s growth journey and reaffirms its increasing relevance in India’s aviation sector. Our continued emphasis on operational excellence, service reliability and delivering a seamless passenger experience is the core of this progress. As we expand into newer domestic and international markets, supported by additional routes and airline partners, NMIA is poised to further strengthen connectivity of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and establish itself as a key aviation gateway for Western India.”
Network Expands to 46 Destinations
Since beginning commercial operations, NMIA has increased its network from 13 destinations to 46. The airport is also preparing to add six more domestic destinations: Udaipur, Jodhpur, Ranchi, Darbhanga, Guwahati and Sindhudurg.
The expansion is expected to increase travel options for passengers in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region while improving connections between Navi Mumbai and key domestic markets.
The airport’s growing network is being supported by the addition of routes and airline partners as NMIA works to establish itself as a second major international airport serving the region.
International Connectivity Begins Within 200 Days
NMIA commenced scheduled international operations in less than 200 days after the start of commercial operations, with Abu Dhabi becoming its first international connection.
The airport is also planning further additions to its international network through new airlines and routes in November 2026, ahead of the winter schedule.
The planned expansion will increase NMIA’s international connectivity while complementing the airport’s growing domestic network.
Building a Gateway for Western India
Navi Mumbai International Airport is being developed and managed by Navi Mumbai International Airport Limited (NMIAL), a public-private partnership between Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) and the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Limited (CIDCO).
As the second international airport serving the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, NMIA is intended to add aviation capacity to the region while supporting economic activity and urban development in Navi Mumbai.
The airport is designed to handle up to 90 million passengers annually when fully completed, with an initial phase capacity of 20 million passengers. Its planned infrastructure also includes capacity to handle 0.5 million metric tonnes of cargo annually.
Focus on Long-Term Capacity and Connectivity
NMIA’s early passenger milestone comes as the airport continues to build its domestic and international network. The addition of new destinations and airline partners is expected to remain central to its growth as it moves through the next stages of operations.
Backed by AAHL, a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises, the airport is being developed around a hub-and-spoke approach, with an emphasis on digital services, operational efficiency, sustainability and passenger-focused infrastructure.
With its expanding route network and planned future capacity, NMIA is positioning itself as an additional aviation gateway for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Western India.
