The greenfield project will be developed across 70 acres with direct beach access, wellness facilities, dining venues, banquet and convention spaces

Indian Hotels Company (IHCL), India’s largest hospitality company, has signed an agreement to develop a Taj hotel in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu, marking the company’s latest expansion in the state. The greenfield project will bring the Taj brand to one of Tamil Nadu’s prominent spiritual destinations.

The 300-key Taj Rameshwaram will be developed across 70 acres in phases and is planned to combine accommodation with wellness, dining, leisure and event facilities. The resort’s location, with direct beach access and connectivity to NH87, will position it for spiritual, leisure and MICE travel.

The partnership underscores Taj’s long-term expansion vision, aligning with developments seen in hotel signings and announcements.

Taj Rameshwaram to Span 70 Acres

The upcoming resort will include a wellness centre as part of its phased development. Its food and beverage offering will comprise two speciality restaurants, a bar lounge and a pool bar, providing multiple dining options for guests.

Recreational facilities will include a swimming pool, fitness centre and a spa featuring multiple treatment rooms. The resort will also include spaces designed for meetings and social gatherings, with a spacious banquet venue, convention spaces and meeting rooms.

IHCL Targets Spiritual and Leisure Tourism

Commenting on the project, Suma Venkatesh, Executive Vice President – Real Estate & Development, IHCL, said,

“Rameswaram is among India’s most prominent spiritual destinations, attracting travellers from across the country and overseas. With growing infrastructure and improving connectivity, the destination presents significant potential for religious, spiritual, leisure and MICE tourism. We are delighted to partner with Setupuram Hotels & Resorts Private Limited for this project and bring the Taj experience to Rameswaram.”

The project is being developed in partnership with Setupuram Hotels & Resorts Private Limited, which will collaborate with IHCL on bringing the Taj brand to Rameshwaram.

    Beachfront Location Near Pamban Bridge

Located on the mainland with direct beach access, the resort will have connectivity to NH87 and is situated near the iconic Pamban Bridge. Its location provides access to Rameshwaram’s key religious and cultural attractions.

The property will be within reach of the Ramanathaswamy Temple, a major pilgrimage destination and one of the Char Dham sites and twelve Jyotirlingas mentioned in the announcement. Rameshwaram is also connected to regional centres including Madurai and Tiruchirappalli.

    Infrastructure Improvements to Support Connectivity

Rameshwaram is witnessing infrastructure development aimed at improving accessibility to the destination. The announcement highlights the expansion of NH87 into a four-lane highway, redevelopment of the railway station and a proposed domestic airport in the region as factors expected to strengthen connectivity.

These developments are expected to support the destination’s appeal for spiritual and leisure travel while creating additional opportunities for hospitality development.

    IHCL Expands Tamil Nadu Portfolio

Rajesh Jograj Bafna, Director, Setupuram Hotels & Resorts Private Limited, said, “We are delighted to partner with IHCL to bring the Taj brand to Rameswaram. This partnership marks an important milestone in our hospitality journey and we look forward to contributing to the region’s tourism potential.”

With the addition of Taj Rameshwaram, IHCL will have 35 hotels in Tamil Nadu, including 16 under development. The project adds to the company’s expanding presence across the state while bringing the Taj brand to another major spiritual destination.
