The Westin Sohna Resort & Spa has announced the launch of Tangra – Tales of Chinatown, its newest signature restaurant inspired by Kolkata’s historic Tangra neighborhood. The dining destination celebrates the cultural and culinary legacy of India’s first Chinatown, where Hakka-style Chinese cuisine first took root and evolved into one of India’s most loved culinary traditions.

    Celebrating Hakka Heritage Through Cuisine

Tangra – Tales of Chinatown brings authentic recipes from Kolkata’s Chinatown into a refined dining space. Signature dishes include Chimney Soup, Shao Mai, Braised Wontons, Tai Po, Yam Mein Noodles, and Tangra-style Chilli Chicken and Paneer. Seafood selections such as Prawn Gold Coins, Golden Garlic Lobster, and Mandarin Chilean Seabass add modern flair to the menu.

The vegetarian menu offers Seven Treasure Vegetables, Vegetables in Cilantro Sauce, and Claypot Vegetables in Chilli Bean Sauce, highlighting the community-driven spirit of Chinese-Indian dining. Festival dishes like Buddha’s Delight celebrate tradition and abundance. Tableside presentations, including Steamed Fish, add to the interactive dining experience.

Desserts such as Darsaan and Fried Ice Cream evoke nostalgia, while cocktails like Loong, Weishiji, and Red Dragon balance the bold flavors of the cuisine.

    Authenticity with Refinement

Tangra stands out for its balance between authenticity and refinement. The restaurant remains faithful to the soulful flavors of Hakka cooking while enhancing them with modern presentation and premium ingredients. Select produce is sourced directly from traditional, family-run makers in Kolkata’s Chinatown, some of whom have preserved original Hakka recipes since the 1950s.

    Leadership Insights

Rahul Puri, Multi-Property General Manager at The Westin Gurgaon New Delhi and The Westin Sohna Resort & Spa, said,

“Tangra at The Westin Sohna Resort & Spa reflects what we truly believe in: experiences that have a soul. It’s not just another restaurant; it’s a story brought to life that captures the essence of Kolkata’s Chinatown with emotion and depth, yet feels refined and contemporary. We wanted to create something that guests would remember long after the meal for its warmth, its character, and the way it makes them feel. Both the menu and the ambience are the result of extensive research and collaboration, with every detail crafted to honour authenticity while presenting it through the lens of contemporary design and culinary finesse.”

Chef Amit Dash, Cluster Executive Chef at The Westin Gurgaon New Delhi and The Westin Sohna Resort & Spa, added,

“Great cuisines are born at the crossroads of culture, and Tangra is one of the most powerful examples of that. It preserves centuries of heritage and memory in every bite. Chinatown in Tangra, Kolkata, was where my love for food first found its voice in the crackle of woks, the aroma of garlic and soy, and the warmth of meals that brought people together. With Tangra – Tales of Chinatown, my dream has been to bring that spirit alive, soulful food rooted in authenticity, presented with refinement, and designed to create experiences that linger not just on the palate, but in memory.”

    Design That Tells a Story

Tangra’s design reflects the layered and symbolic aesthetic of Kolkata’s Chinatown. Guests enter through a koi pond and timber doors, flanked by granite guardian lions representing prosperity and protection. Inside, a parasol-inspired chandelier casts a warm light across the room. Dining tables with Mahjong tile-inspired gold inlays add a touch of tradition, while the open kitchen brings the theatre of cooking to life through sound and aroma.

The restaurant accommodates 32 indoor and 24 outdoor guests across 4,300 sq. ft., creating a setting that blends intimacy with grandeur. Artisanal tableware complements the cuisine while maintaining the focus on heritage.

    A Cultural and Culinary Escape

Tangra marks a new direction in destination dining for The Westin Sohna Resort & Spa, blending nostalgia, heritage, and contemporary hospitality. Located within 60 acres of green landscape and only a 40-minute drive from Gurgaon, the restaurant offers guests an experience that connects nature’s calm with the cultural vibrancy of Kolkata’s Chinatown.
